DetailsRecognising goutweed - characteristics of Aegopodium Podagraria
Once a bed has been affected, it is very difficult to get rid of the ground cover, as ground elder (Aegopodium podagraria) can reproduce itself both via its underground rhizomes (creeping roots) and via seeds. It is therefore important to recognise the young plants as early as possible and to combat goutweed efficiently, especially in beds that have already been planted. The cone plant, which is native to Europe and Asia, has a number of distinctive characteristics that make it easy to recognise:
- Leaf shape: Large and jagged leaves
- Leaf stalk: Triangular stalk
- Flavour: Easily recognisable by its taste, reminiscent of carrot and parsley
- Growth: approx. 30 cm high carpet of leaves
- Flowering: May - Semptember, umbel-shaped white inflorescences up to 100 cm high
- Soil: nutrient- and humus-rich soil with an even water supply
- Site: light shade from woody plants
Remove the roots of goutweed
Mainly for unplanted areas
The roots of goutweed lie up to 30 cm deep in the soil. Loosen the soil extensively with a digging fork. Do not use a spade to dig up the soil. Carefully lift the soil with the fork to expose the goutweed. If the soil is not too heavy, you can follow the network and pull up the roots without breaking them.
The difficulty with this method is not to leave any of the white root pieces. Goutweed sprouts again very quickly, so you will have to repeat the method until it stops sprouting.
What else to consider
- Work precisely and repeat the sieving process several times in the same place, e.g. using a sieve
- Pay attention to the weather. It is best if the soil is dry
- If the bed is already overgrown or you have loamy and compact soil, you will find it difficult to remove the rhizome without leaving any residue
- Breaking the roots of the goutweed stimulates new growth and the plant sprouts anew under its own steam. Therefore, take care not to damage the roots
- Do not dispose of the weed in the residual waste bin on the compost heap or in the organic waste bin. The rhizome has enough strength to sprout again for up to a year

Home remedy salt to combat goutweed
We advise against it and suggest an effective alternative!
We do not recommend using chemical solutions of salt or vinegar as weed killers. The substances become embedded in the leaves of the goutweed and the goutweed dries out. Unfortunately, this method only helps to combat goutweed in the short term. The salt accumulates in the soil and the growth of robust plants (usually weeds) is encouraged.
Surrounding plants can be damaged by the use of such household remedies, causing the weeds to become a bigger problem. In addition, even mixed salt solutions are not officially categorised as weedkillers, which is why their use in flower beds is prohibited. If you use salt solution to control goutweed, you can obviously cause a lot of damage. You may even end up with more weeds than before the treatment.
Many people resort to chemicals when nothing else helps. We advise against this and explain another method. This allows you to get rid of goutweed efficiently, in the long term and without heavy manual labour.
Smother ground elder with cardboard or fleece
Exclusively for unplanted areas
Smothering the goutweed, e.g. with cardboard, foil, fleece or ribbon fabric, is a simple method of combating goutweed. However, allow sufficient time. As this resistant plant still has sufficient vigour to sprout again even after more than a year, it is necessary to leave the covered area for two years. Experience shows that only then will the underground part of the plant be completely dead.
This method is therefore only suitable if you have enough time and patience to leave the bed fallow for at least two years. Otherwise, the goutweed will sprout again, and you will have to start all over again. Firstly, cut off the tall foliage of the goutweed. Cover the soil with cardboard or the alternatives mentioned above. Then cover this with approx. 10 cm of bark mulch. After two years, the goutweed and the spread cardboard will have rotted, and you will have cleared the bed of goutweed.
What else to consider
- Suitable for large unplanted areas
- The seeds of the plant remain germinable for a very long time. You should therefore continue to keep a watchful eye on your bed.
- Protect your bed in the long term and cover it with a fleece; you can mulch it with chopped bark for visual appeal. If you want to replant the bed, simply cut slits in the fleece and plant your perennials
Permanent solution with hot water only
without additives
Removing weeds with hot water is up to 20 times more effective than with conventional methods such as gas burners or hot air blowers and other household remedies.
Unkrautfuchs works with constantly regulated hot water (temperature above 90°). Our patented control ensures a constant temperature close to boiling point. Only at temperatures close to boiling point does the effect occur and the plant cells are destroyed. As a result, the weeds can no longer absorb water and photosynthesis can no longer take place - the plant dries out.
Advantages of the Unkrautfuchs
- The Unkrautfuchs is your ideal companion for combating goutweed in mixed plantings. Due to the selective application, surrounding plants are not damaged.
- The application only with hot water, the convenient handling - without bending down and the lasting effect after only a few applications are convincing.
- Can be used in any weather, no longer wait for good weatherProblem-free
- Use in the vegetable garden, on terraces, paths, high-quality ceramics, lawns and sandboxes

The ideal solution in combination with Unkrautfuchs to combat goutweed.
Do not allow the goutweed to flower and cut it off before using the Unkrautfuchs. Never throw weeded goutweed into the compost as it will sprout again. Instead, use the valuable plant by processing the goutweed in the kitchen.
For years, goutweed was a very popular medicinal plant and wild vegetable. Rich in vitamin C, provitamin A, proteins, minerals and essential oils, goutweed is a regional superfood. In contrast to the garden, goutweed makes a lot of friends in the kitchen. Prepare tea, delicious pesto or soothing soups.
